Do I have kleptomania?

On Behalf of | Nov 4, 2019 | Property Crimes |

Facing a shoplifting charge in Colorado may not be something you ever expected to do. However, if you have a problem with stealing items, there may be more going on here than criminal tendencies. In fact, you may have a real mental disorder that is leading to your problems. Kleptomania, according to the Mayo Clinic, is a disorder that causes you to have the inability to resist the urge to steal.

You probably do not need to steal anything. The things you do steal may be very small and something you do not need and could afford to buy. However, your disorder cause compulsions that make you unable to resist taking it. You may feel regret, guilt and shame after taking something. You may hide the items or get rid of them soon after the incident so that nobody sees them due to the guilt.

If you notice these urges occur often and the only way to stop them is to take something, then you may have kleptomania. It is important to note this disorder is very rare, but when it does occur, it is an impulse control disorder that requires counseling to overcome. No doctor can cure you, but you can learn to avoid the compulsions and stop taking things that are not yours.

If you think that you may have this disorder, you should seek help. It can prevent future shoplifting charges and help you to feel more at ease in your life since you will be able to over the compulsions and no longer need to steal. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
